Broadband coverage in County Sligo

Survey of Fixed Line (via Telephone Line)

The provision of quality Broadband throughout County Sligo is one of the priority actions agreed by the County Development Board in its Action Plan for 2009 – 2011.

The I.T. Department of Sligo County Council and the Institute of Technology in Sligo are carrying out a survey to determine the quality and availability of Fixed Landline (telephone line) Broadband throughout the County.

This work is being carried out under the Economic Development Sub-Committee of the County Development Board to determine more clearly the quality of existing Broadband and where the black-spots are in various townlands throughout the County.

People are being asked to log onto their own PCs at home (or at their private businesses located throughout the County) so that the Broadband speed in their own area at home can be recorded with a view to having the results communicated to the Department of Communications.

It is hoped that this information will influence the Department when they are rolling out the National Broadband Scheme and accordingly improve Broadband quality and availability in County Sligo.

Survey of Mobile Broadband Coverage in County Sligo

The Sligo County Development Board with the Sligo County Community Forum and Sligo County Council is currently examining Mobile Broadband Coverage and Availability throughout the County of Sligo.

This survey is being carried out as the existing coverage by wireless Broadband providers in the County does not cover the entire County, resulting in areas where the quality of the service may be below an acceptable level or even non existent.

SURECOM Network Solutions have been commissioned to conduct this Benchmark Survey and to map the area of service availability and throughput from the existing operators within the County.  The survey is underway at present and involves the use of specialized drive testing tools and the survey will allow for a complete overview of the Broadband Services Provided by Mobile Operators in County Sligo.

This is the first benchmark study of its kind to be undertaken in any County and the results will be used as a measure of the effectiveness of the current Broadband Strategy in Sligo.

It is hoped that the survey results will influence the Department of Communications when they are rolling out the National Broadband Scheme in County Sligo.
