Fun for all at Sligo Play Day 2011

National Play Day is promoted by the National Play and Recreation Resource Centre (NPRRC), the key aim of which is to promote traditional games and activities and give all children an opportunity to take part (www.nprrc.ie).

This year, Doorly Park was the venue for Sligo’s celebration of National Play Day on Sunday 3rd July 2011 with attendance from approximately 100 children.

A variety of activities was organised by Sligo County Council, Sligo Borough Council, Sligo County Childcare Committee and Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership which were available for children up to 12 years.

New activities this year included gardening, tag Gaelic and golf which proved very popular with everyone.

Many took part in the other sports activities such as basketball, soccer and tag rugby. Coaches were also on hand to guide adults in the use of the Outdoor Gym equipment.

For the little ones activities such as arts and crafts and messy play were provided. Face painters were busy doing creative work on children and adults alike!

The final event of the day included children of all ages participating in the many races some of which included egg & spoon races and sack races.

Mayor of Sligo, Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady, acknowledged the work of local agencies in organising the participation of Sligo in this national event. She also welcomed the opportunity given to the children to participate in the many and varied activities available on the day.
