Spotlight on Your Community Launch

Sligo County Development Boards “Spotlight on Your Community” Project was recently showcased to an audience consisting of the Mayor of Sligo Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady, Leas Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Matt Lyons and the Chair of Sligo County Development Board, Councillor Gerard Mullaney along with community representatives from across the county. The showcase marked the web based project going live on www.sligo.ie

“Spotlight on your Community” is part of the County Development Boards “Creative Sligo Initiative” and was a collaboration involving the Department of Community and Enterprise, Sligo County Council, Sligo Volunteer Centre and Sligo County Commnity Forum. The project profiles some of Sligo’s active communities in action via short film clips which were produced by a team of three volunteers from the rich pool of talent associated with Sligo Volunteer Centre’s skills data base. The three volunteers include Project Mentor James Fraher, who is a professional graphic designer and photographer, Sheila Lehany, photographer and Liam Guinnane, sound technician. Over a period of months the volunteer team filmed and recorded 11 community and voluntary groups from across Sligo at work in their community. Each presentation tells the unique story of the various community projects and groups who participated, the objective of which was to promote active citizenship and showcase the diversity of community activity in the county.

In essence the project is about volunteers showcasing the work of other volunteers and described by the Mayor of Sligo, Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady as “the unsung heroes in our community”.

While the project was initiated during 2010 the EU year of Social Inclusion it is apt that it is being launched in 2011 which is EU year of the Volunteer. It is intended that the project will encourage more people to get involved in and engage with their community.

The Project Partners describe the level of interest from the Community to participate in the project as overwhelming and a total of 11 groups are featured. The finished product is available for viewing on www.sligo.ie and www.sligocdb.ie
