The Peace III Programme in Sligo was formally announced by the Special EU Programmes Body ( SEUPB ) at an Information Roadshow held in the Glasshouse, Sligo on 27th January.

Theme 1.1 Building Positive Relations at the local level
Aim of Theme 1.1 Building Positive Relations at the Local Level aims
‘to challenge attitudes towards sectarianism and racism and support conflict resolution and mediation at the local community level. The Priority also aims to establish meaningful cross-community and cross-border initiatives that will improve trust and tolerance, and reduce levels of sectarianism and racism’.

SLIGO Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Committee
In February 2008 Sligo County Development Board established as a sub-committee Sligo Peace & Reconciliation Partnership Committee.
Sligo County Council is the Lead Partner in the Sligo Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Committee and secretariat support is provided to the Partnership by the Office of Community and Enterprise.
Through a process of extensive public consultation, the Sligo Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Committee developed a Peace and Reconciliation Action Plan for Sligo (2008 – 2010). This plan was submitted to the SEUPB for approval and funding up to €1.9 million was approved in November 2008

Membership of the Sligo Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Committee was, in the first instance, drawn from agencies represented on the CDB - Local Government, Local Development, State Agencies and Social Partners. In keeping with the ethos of the Peace III Programme and to ensure that the perspectives of programme ‘target’ groups were represented on the partnership committee it was agreed that membership be extended under the umbrella of the Community Forum.

Consortium Support
A cross-border consortium with Partners - Pobal (Ireland) and the Community Relations Council (NI) - have been contracted by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) to assist Partnerships in the delivery of Priority 1.1. Liam McKeever, Pobal and Peter Day, Community Relations Council have been appointed to work with Sligo Peace & Reconciliation Partnership Committee.
The Project has been supported by EU’s PEACE III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Sligo County Council on behalf of Sligo Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Committee
