New communities

The Sligo LEADER Partnership has the brief of working with migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in the area of social inclusion and through services for the unemployed, community development and community based youth initiatives.

Migrants, from as far afield as Poland, the Philippines or India, can ask for help in setting up and maintaining support groups, organising social events, information sessions,etc.

There are two categories of refugees: Programme Refugees who have been invited by the Irish government to come and live in Ireland and Convention Refugees who have gone through the asylum seeker process.  In Sligo, there are approximately 60 Kurdish men, women and children who came to Sligo in 2006. Other towns have welcomed refugees from other countries such as Burmah and the Sudan  There are approximately 50 convention refugees who were persecuted in their own country.  In addition, there are 40 men, women and children who have obtained leave to remain in Ireland on humanitarian grounds.

Migrants, refugees and people with leave to remain on humanitarian grounds have the same rights as Irish citizens except that they cannot vote in referenda, for the Dail or for presidential elections.

Asylum seekers are people who have come into this country and asked for its protection while their application for asylum is being processed.  There are approximately 220 asylum seekers residing in the accommodation centre Globe House in Sligo town. If you wish, you can visit their website at www.bridgestock.ie People from 40 different nationalities reside in Globe House. Asylum seekers are supported by the Sligo LEADER Partnership at many levels.
