A Better Life for Older People In Sligo

In September 2007, the SIM Group held a seminar “A Better Life for Older People in Sligo”.  The aims of the Seminar were to:-

  1. Provide a forum for older people to highlight key challenges they face and identify key areas of need.
  2. Allow representatives of agencies to communicate information about existing services and policies targeting older people.
  3. To provide an opportunity for older people in Sligo to participate in the development of an action plan by the Social Inclusion Measures group targeting their identified needs.

Sligo Active Age Network

The aim of this network is to break down the barriers which currently exist between urban and rural older people and to increase the level of integration between these groups within the county. The first network meeting was held last year as an introduction to the concept of networking and the benefits it can have, especially in a relatively small county such as Sligo. The day comprised a series of demonstrations including Yoga and aromatherapy and talks centred around the health issues of Osteoporosis and Cholesterol. In all over 100 people attended the day from 14 groups in the county and, from information gathered on evaluation forms, it became clear that this kind of interaction was something that people very much wanted to pursue.

On the basis of this information, as well as regular consultation with individual groups, it was decided that Sligo LEADER Partnership would work closely with a consortium of groups in the county to apply for funding on the behalf of the network to role out a programme which comprises four main elements:

  • Development of Strong network of older people within Sligo
  • Development of a Handbook for Active Age groups throughout the county
  • Delivery of a health and exercise programme for the groups
  • Development of an art programme and involvement of active age members in carnival production
