Play and Recreation

The National Play Policy, ‘Ready Steady Play’ directed that local authorities develop play policies and that City/County Development Boards develop County/City Play Plans to maximise the development of play provision in their areas.
In response to this Sligo County Council, Sligo Borough Council and Sligo County Development Board have come together to establish a Local Play Advisory Forum with the dual role of developing a play policy for the local authorities and a County
Play Plan.  The role of the Local Play Advisory Forum is to:

  • advise on the development of a play policy for the County Council
  • advise on a County Play Plan for the County Development Board

Play and Recreation

The forum is an interdepartmental and interagency group made up of representatives from various departments within the local authorities, elected members and external groups.

Organisations represented on Play Advisory Forum include:

  • Community Forum,
  • Department of Education and Science,
  • Education Centre,
  • Health Service Executive North West,
  • Play and Recreation Development Officer,
  • RAPID Co-ordinator,
  • Sligo County Childcare Committee,
  • Sligo Leader Partnership Co.,
  • Sports and Recreation Partnership,
  • Chair SPC1 and
  • Representation from different sections in Sligo Local Authorities.3

Play and Recreation

Teenspace the National Recreation Policy for Young People was launched in September, 2007. The policy provides a strategic framework for the promotion of positive recreational opportunities aimed principally at young people aged 12 to 18. Various Government Departments and agencies are tasked with delivering on seven core objectives and corresponding actions. The Government Departments and agencies include: Local Authorities, County Development Boards, HSE, Department of Education and Science, Department of Rural, Community and Gaeltacht Affairs, Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism and Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The commitment of agencies to deliver on the relevant sections of the policy must be reflected in any future plans / strategy statements – this will include the CDB Integrated Play and Recreation Strategy which is an action of Sligo CDB.

Specific actions for CBD under Teenspace are as follows:

  • Objective 4, Action 53 - County Development Boards should pay particular attention to recruiting young people with disabilities to Comhairle na nŌg
  • Objective 6, Action 64 - Each County Development Board should lead on the preparation of an interagency recreation strategy for young people in their area.
